24:00

why 24 minutes

25 is the pomodoro number, and it has been the pomodoro number since the 1980s. It is a fine length. The problem is that it has become a unit of homework — a thing you are supposed to do properly, in sets, with a chart.

24 is short enough that starting stops being a decision, and long enough that the thing you have been avoiding actually moves. That is the whole of the theory.

a timer is not the hard part

If you already know what to work on and you simply want a clock, you have one — use it, and ignore the rest of this page.

But most people who look for a focus timer are not short of clocks. They are avoiding one specific thing, they have been avoiding it for weeks, and a countdown does not touch that. The research is fairly settled here: procrastination is a mood problem rather than a time-management one. You are not avoiding the task, you are avoiding how the task makes you feel.

what mog does instead

mog is this timer with something at stake. You name the thing you have been putting off, you sit with it for 24 minutes, and a small creature eats the session and grows. Skip a couple of days and he sours. Go a week and he dies, for good.

It is a commitment device, which is an old and well-evidenced idea: a stake beats an intention. It also happens to be a creature with ears.
